Description

One of the great challenges of the modern workplace is delegating and assigning work to others without creating misunderstanding. Effective delegation allows a manager to motivate and develop colleagues, as well as using resource wisely and saving time. However, a poor delegation process can exacerbate communication breakdown, result in frustration and wasted time because the task has not been completed to the standard required.

The same core skills are required if the purpose of the delegation is a short task like the writing of a report, or a project requiring a longer time frame. In this one-hour session, we will explore the art of delegating effectively, whether you are the delegator or the colleague carrying out the task.

You will take away a checklist with clear guidelines to use when assigning or receiving tasks.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the session, you will be able to:

  • recognise the difference between allocation and effective delegation
  • recognise the need to set the context and define the task clearly
  • identify the key skills required to ensure that the communication of the task is understood as the delegator intends: communication culture and styles, reflective listening, questioning and seeking feedback
